Internet Privacy

This is an article from News Channel 8 Pennsylvania about how easy it has become to access someone's personal information through the internet. Please watch the video at the bottom along with reading the article.

Here are some things to think about:

How does this clip drawn in the audience? Why is the short article provided along with the video? How do we interpret this article due to our high technology based society? How does this relate to our topic of public vs. private?

  1. This article uses scare tactics to draw the audience in. They told you that they can find out personal information if you gave them your name FOR FREE! The article along with the video is a summery of the video to get you, the viewer, more interested in the topic they are presenting and persuade you to watch the full video clip. Il admit, I didn't even see the video until it was mentioned in the prompt.
This article shows that there are easy was to access personal information about many people online. According to the clip, the more information you put out online, the more information that can be available to anyone in the public to access your private information. The people they interviewed we're shocked to see how much information was online about them. The control test was a guy who they couldn't find much information on who later mentioned that he does not spend much time online.

  2. The article relates to public vs. private because it is exposing very personal information out to the public. The exposure could face a potential threat and the volunteers are clearly disturbed when they can see their current residence. What interests me is that people continue to access websites that ask for specific information like in the article and do not change much privacy settings. Do people think that they are an exception to the rule or simply do not care that their lives are public to anyone who does their research?

  3. This video focuses on average people, which is meant to draw in the audience. They want to show that they can find information about almost anyone by simply using their name and google search. This article relates to private vs. public because the public is invading the private. People are accessing "personal" information by simply searching their name. After discussing the meaning of personal information, this topic interests me. I do agree with Austin relating to people posting their personal information. If people think this information is so "personal" then they should not post it on online sites. With that being said, I do believe it is nearly impossible to hide all details of your life from the internet.

  4. Austin and Brittany are on to something interesting here, in the age of technology that we are in should these people be surprised that you can find certain personal information of theirs' on the internet? Where does this 'personal information' that they are finding become 'private information'?

  5. It is faster and easier to read a short paragraph than it is to watch a video clip to find out if one likes it or not. Therefore that article was provided as a median to grab audience into watching the video. That is also why they don’t have to put the video up on top nor do they have the make the video big enough to see the video without having to read the article. With the day and age we are at now, it is impossible to avoid technology and in the US impossible to avoid the internet. It all depends on how much time is spending on it. The author uses this information to attract attention from people because they relate this to themselves; especially when the something can be harmful to them. The video does a good job by giving the audience the proof that they need to trust the article and the situation. If it was only the article people might not believe it as much, but with the video and the set up in the mall it grabs people’s trust and attention.
This relates to the theme of public vs. private because when people provide private information online they are most likely in a private setting. A setting where they feel comfortable that they can give out private information, but what they don’t know is that even though they are in a private setting there is a strong bridge called internet that draws their privacy into public. Thus, public invading public.

  6. I think that this "personal" information becomes public as soon as it is posted on the internet. Even if someone feels as though they are in a comfortable, private setting, they should realize the internet is not private. I think this is an issue of private invading the public. People post private information in statuses or tweets that is very personal. They post this information for only their followers to see but do they really know and trust all of their followers or "friends" on facebook? Information, private information, can easily be copied and pasted all over the internet. People's private lives are invading our public sites.

  7. The article is just a brief introduction about the video. If you are interested in this topic ,then you will click the video and watch it. And video visually and vividly expresses the information in the article.I agree with Brittany's viewpoint about "personal" information becoming public as it is posted on the internet. It is a kind of dilemma that people post their "personal" information on the website and hope "somebody" or certain people could have a look at it, but they don't want anyone to access to their "private"information. They made a wrong decision about choosing Internet as a tool to express their "personal" information, because we all know Internet is not private. Even you post your personal information on some specific websites, such as bank, insurance company, who promise you that your personal information will be concealed seriously. Is it really safe for your personal information?
