New Jason Russel (Kony Creator) The Naked Meltdown

http://www.tmz.com/2012/03/18/jason-russell-video-naked-meltdown-kony/

This is a video of the Meltdown of the Kony Creator, Jason Russel, filmed by TMZ:
1. How is his mental breakdown that should be private invading the people around him?
2. How does someone's quick rise to stardom effect their private mental state? And does being in the public eye have anything to do with this?
3. How does the time and setting of his meltdown escalate the dangers invovled and the public?
4. How does this video relate to our theme of "Private vs. Public"?

  1. Something so personal like this is usually not controlled. I think that he invaded the public by obviously being naked in public and also the language he was using. This is invading public because there could be children or people that have a problem with the way he is acting. There was a man standing next to him that looked as if he did not know how to react to such profound activity.
Jason Russel rose quick to fame after the release of his video about awareness of a wanted criminal. I think that this effected his private mental state because he did not grow fame the usual way by performing in a movie, show, or explicit video/picture. This video only came about after he accumulated publicity. I think if someone is not used to being critiqued by the public on a normal basis, there are negative effects.
This relates to our "Public vs. Private" theme because it is a private matter and private parts that are being exposed to the public. Wanted or not, these acts of exploitation are something that is invading the people in public.

    1. I definitely agree what you said about how a quick rise to stardom can negatively effect someone. Especially in his case his video completely blew up in a matter of days and his new found glory was probably difficult to deal with. Soon he probably found himself having his privacy being invaded by reporters and such. This could easily have caused the mental break down which caused him to invade the public's privacy by exposing himself to whomever saw him. The video clearly occurs in the middle of the day which makes one to believe that many people would have seen him acting this way

  2. This meltdown could be due to going so quickly from being just a face in the crowd to a very well known leader. This could be affecting his mental health because like Austin said, he may not be used to being in the limelight. Because of this, Jason may not know how to appropriately act as a newfound celebrity or maybe like other celebrities, he is looking for some attention.
Happening about a month before the 4/20 “Cover the Night” event, this event shows that he is not completely serious about his work, even after all the time and money spent to get everyone to listen to what he had to say. I am surprised that he would pull a stunt like this when he has thousands of people across the nation supporting him. Because of this, his campaign could quickly lose supporters if they see him acting like this, which would affect the kids he is trying to save.
This relates to our course theme because although Jason was obviously very upset, he confused the boundary between what should be kept public and private especially as a well-known figure. His choice to publicize his meltdown, a private moment, in turn will affect the work he is doing. Now the public can assume from this video that he is crazy or very dramatic in real life due to this incident. This video is proof that he may not be the professional, down-to-earth leader like seen in the Kony videos.

  3. His personal irrational manner has invaded the public. This may happen rarely, but it does really have a negative effect to the society, especial to the children. Not only his naked body, but also his dirty words have made people around him uncomfortable.

Jason Russel was stressed by criticism of his film, and the criticism from the public exhausts his personal mental defense and then as we see, the meltdown happened. It's hard to say that he wants to take advantage of his abnormal activity to raise the public attention or his naked body and dirty words are a kind of way to release his stress. However, it's clear for us that his personal behavior has ruined his fame; meanwhile his behavior invades the public.

We can judge from the case that personal behavior invades the public, but let's think about what is the factor to cause his mental meltdown? Public criticism?

    1. I agree with your comment Jiachu. I think that his quick rise to fame, as well as his privacy being invaded by paparazzi could have led to his meltdown. I think you may have something with public criticism leading to his meltdown. Not only was his work critiqued by millions of people, he also was involved in the KONY 2012 campaign.

Although Jason had a meltdown, do you think this act of invading the public with his private acts will have any further implications for KONY 2012, or the rest of his future?

    2. Jiachu, I think it is very interesting that you bring up the public criticism causing his breakdown. Obviously, after a quick rise to fame like Jason had, the media focuses a lot of attention on this person. It is a huge change to go from a normal person to having your every move watched and then criticized. Jason felt invaded by the public. This invasion led to his invasion of the public with his private. It seems as though the public causes many celebrities to go "crazy." Going crazy often leads to these celebrities invading the public with their breakdowns. Interesting the cycle that is created....

  4. This video of Jason Russell having a mental break, that was later diagnosed as brief reactive psychosis or BRP, is an example of private invading public. BRP can be brought on by any significant event in ones life, such as becoming homeless, moving, devorce, ect. Having your video get 104 million views in two weeks could also stress someone out enough to have a breakdown. He is lucky he didn't wander into traffic while he was in such a compromised state, since he was so close to a road. Everyone who was driving by that day was invaded in the public space by this man's private matters.

  5. His mental breakdown is affecting the people around him because he is in a public place. Private is when something done by someone that is in a private space. Since he is in a public place he is invading other people’s privacy by letting them look at his body parts. Making the people around him uncomfortable. As in the thematic reading in class, the person taking a leak on the sidewalk is invading the author, the mental breakdown is affecting the people around him in the same way. Also not only is he invading other people’s privacy through showing his body parts, he is also blabbing out words that would invade other people. Of course, people vary from person to person. So some people might take it offensive and take it as him invading their privacy, but others might not. As shown by the fact that the person filming this apparently thinks that this is funny and does not take it offensively. Their quick rise to stardom affects their mental state by making what is usually private in their mental state now public. Of course, in order for it to be public he will have to show it to the public. Therefore, being in public is what is making his breakdown public. If he was doing these things in his own house, it probably would not be public and therefore not invade other people’s privacy.

  6. I like what everyone is getting from the video. How does this incident relate to the picture we saw in class of the streaker at the soccer game? Also is the man taking the video invading Jason's privacy even though he is in a public area?

    1. This incident relates directly to the picture we saw in class the other day. The picture in class the other day was of a man whose privacy was invading the public, but in that picture his privacy was being censored by the law so that the privacy of the public was no longer invaded. A similar situation occurred in this video. Jason Russell is invading the public’s privacy with his own privacy. The man taking the video is not invading this mans privacy because the man is already in public. Like we have discussed in earlier blog posts (the one about security cameras) when your in public, your basically fair game for who ever wants to take a picture or video of you, its what happens to that picture or video after that is controversial.

  7. The man's behavior is invading other people. He appears naked in public which may make other people feel offensive. One's nudity should be in private. So he makes his nudity appear in public is definitely wrong. I don't think Jason Russel should quick rise in such way since this is not a way that many people admired. He makes many strange behaviors on the side walk which seems weird. I think what he wants to do is just to make other people pay attention. Of course, the longer he appears in the public, the more offensive other people feel. In general, people should not support such stardom and make him popular.

This video clip relates to our theme because it talks about a man appears in the public area naked just want to quick rise. His behavior is invading other. In other words, he uses his privacy to invade others.

  8. This incident relates to the picture we saw in the class to some extent. Both Jason and the man in the picture did a crazy thing that can give a shock to the public. Their nudity causes others to feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. In that sense, the public gets invaded by their personal behavior that seems strange and obeys social rules. However, when it is observed form another perspective, things may change. Their abnormal behavior can be interpreted as an action to express their unsatisfactory towards the world. The reason why they behave like this may be that they feel stressed out and getting invaded by others. And I think the man taking this video also invades Jason’s privacy. Moreover, he is invading the public. It is he that puts this video online and makes a private thing become public.

  9. Like mentioned before this act of a mental breakdown invades the public and relates to our course theme in a few ways. The most obvious being that he's naked on the side of the street where anyone can see. Another way this invades the public and ultimately is negative is how he will lose supporters because of the way he acted. His quick start-up to fame gained the supports of thousands of people across the world and for him to not be able to hold himself together shows he might not be capable of leading such a great thing. Like other great celebrities though this could have just been an act to gain more public attention in hopes that more people would learn about who he is and what his cause stands for.

  10. This conversation is certainly detailing some important events. With the rapidly sprawling social media network people such as Jason Russel can post a simple production that appeals to emotion and then be launched into the celebrity arena. This is a dangerous, albeit rare implication of the ever-listening social network. Looking at this video though the quality of this video and the location of which it was taken leaves me to believe that this was taken by a standard citizen rather than paparazzi. This means that this photographer was making evidence of someones privacy intruding into the public, instead of personally hunting out private matters in a private setting. As some have pointed out above this could have easily turned for the worse though. Being so close to traffic and Jason Russel being so out his mind he truly did present a hazard to the public rather than just his nudity.
Learning from this incident should people take more responsibility in what they create so as to avoid the limelight if they aren't ready?
