Naked people in a commercial?!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6qhBW1yA7g

This is a german commercial published in July 2011. Please watch the commercial and think about the following things:

1. Even if you cannot understand the conversation, what product is presented? Which things does this company use to persuade you to buy the product? Why does this company use naked people to appeal to the customer? Which social stereotypes are shown? Does this commercial appeal to a special audience?

2. To what extent is this commercial provocative? (consider the censored body parts and the general fact that these people are naked)

3. How does this commercial relate to our course theme "Private vs. Public"?

  1. I guess this commercial is trying to persuade people to buy the lady's shoes. The commercial highlights two ladises, from an imaginery group of people, who don't wear cloths, that bought the shoes online. When they get the delivery, they two were so excited that they can wear the new shoes. But it is against the group's rule. So, they got so upset and disappointed.
This company uses naked people to tell customers that those people don't even need clothes, but they still want our shoes.
The naked-people-idea is also the contrast to the real life. Because human beings are civilized and everybody needs clothes. people would be very curious about what it is like when everyone is naked, then consumers will pay much attention to this commercial and remember the brand of shoes for long time. People always get strong impressions of things that are beyond our imaginations.
i think this commercial relates to our course theme by involving the body private issue. We all know the structure of human body--it is the common sense, however, everyone of us needs to wear clothes to keep some privacy for ourselves. And if someone exposes his/her body to the public in the daily life, people around would feel being offended.

    1. I like how you said that if someone were to expose their own personal body, that other people would be interrupted and uncomfortable. This commercial reverses that idea and the mailman with clothes on is the one that is being "exposed" and uncomfortable.

  2. The product that is being presented would be the obvious shoes from the company Zalando. I think the commercial tries to draw a person in with the use of naked people. The social stereotype at play here is that girls always buy shoes. As Yi Li said, "This company uses naked people to tell customers that those people don't even need clothes, but they still want our shoes" is showing this stereotype since this community of people do not wear clothes.

I think another important aspect of this commercial is that the commercial is trying to show that this naked culture still acts as normal people in the items they buy and use, i.e. They have bikes, chess, places to live.

In terms of private vs. public, this commercial is taking a scenario that modern civilized people would see as private (The people not wearing clothes) and showing it to the public (The consumers) in order to sell a product.

    1. I agree with Dennis. The commercial is about selling shoes but the commercial also leads into other more important topic. The company is trying though this commercial appeal to all people. The commercial also shows how sex plays a role in advertisment.

  3. The commercial is presenting shoes from Zalando as the product, and possibly trying to employ shock and sex appeal to sell their shoes. The people at this nudist camp are obviously there because they like to live without clothes, but two women are so enamored with Zalando's shoes they buy them anyway, showing that Zalando makes popular shoes. This may be using the stereotype of women's love for shoes. The commercial's target demographic could be women (as indicated by the women's excitement to receive the shoes), and it could even be argued that men are a target demographic from this commercial (as indicated by naked women). This commercial is certainly provocative in the sense that it has naked people, even if they are blurred, the audience gets the idea. This relates to our theme of private vs public because the delivery man appeared to expect a public space, but people's naked (private) bodies were making him uncomfortable.

  4. I agree with Yi on how she said people would pay attention to this commercial due to curiosity. Although we don’t all want to admit it since nakedness is slightly uncomfortable, this shoe company does use curiosity to keep the viewer watching. If this commercial came on after a show you were watching, because the naked bodies are so shocking and strange, majority of the time viewers will stop and watch because the naked people in the commercial make you want to know what the commercial is trying to say or what it is advertising. At the same time, in a family setting, this commercial would be immediately turned off and not do much for the company. With this in mind, the commercial is probably aimed for young adults 20+. This also relates to our course theme because the privacy of our homes are being invaded by the company’s (public) idea of what appeals to viewers just to sell their product. Just like in the thematic reading for this week, the naked people in commercial casually doing daily things is like the man who is taking a leak on the side of the road; both don’t realize that the man viewing this feels his privacy is being completely invaded. This commercial approach could either work in the companies favor since it is so different and may catch people’s attention, or completely work against them due to how invaded people may feel after watching.

  5. The commercial is doing a very interesting job of trying to sell Zolando shoes. Showing that even people who live in total nakedness still need these shoes because they are just that good, according to the commercial. I definitely agree with what both Yi and Lauren have said about the idea that this image of naked people keeps the viewer curious about what is going to happen next. It is also interesting that the mailman at the end feels uncomfortable with having clothes on because everyone else has them off. As for our course theme I think video relates by showing how everyone has their own sense of what privacy is. The people who live naked don't see that as a private invasion, to them it is public. But the mailman see this as an invasion of his privacy

    1. I like the way you sumed up how this commercial is realted to our course theme. I agree that the mailman see those naked people as an invasion of his prirvacy while the naked people don't see the mailman looking at them as an invasion of their privacy. It's a good point that "everyone has their own sence of what privacy is." Some questions to think about here... How do people come up with what their sense of what privacy is? What really is privacy? When is A invading B's privacy?

    2. To answer Jisoo’s question, I think people base their idea of privacy based on societal norms. Different societies have different views on privacy, as shown in this commercial. What one group thinks is different from another group. Look at the difference between this factious nudist colony (or America) and many of the Arab countries. The Arab countries think that everyone, especially the women, should be wearing some sort of clothing on every part of their body, where as in America, we can basically wear what we want, and this nudist colony can wear nothing.

  6. You are all doing a really great job so far!!!
Keep commenting and try to see the small things, which we might miss when we watch the commercial the first time.
For example the music in the background sounds relaxed and unconcerned. This represents the feelings of the naked people, because they do not care about being naked. It is normal for them. This is a contrast to the mailman's feelings, because he obviously feels uncomfortable and is not relaxed. Also the fact that the women scream, because they get their shoes, that the mailman screams, because he is scared about putting his clothes away, and at the end that the other group of people starts screaming too, is an important thing Zalando added to get more attention.

Can you find more hidden details, which may be important?

  7. This s a very interesting and attractive commercial. It uses the naked people to make a vision attract and then emphasizes on the shoes that two naked women bought. The commercial is persuading people to buy Zalando shoes.

There are three scream in the commercial. First one, the two naked women’s screams because their amazing shoes are delivered. Second one, mailman’s screaming, maybe he is afraid of being naked. Third one, the group leader’s screaming, maybe he wants to say: Hei, dude, it is normal of being naked in our community.”

The repetition of scream makes me feel that this commercial relates to our theme. For this naked group people, they feel normal of being naked but mailman is nervous and uncomfortable when he is standing in front of a group of naked people. The mailman’s privacy is invaded by the public “normal” behavior.

    1. I think Jiachu is on to something here. The mailman is in a public area but feels as though his privacy may be invaded. So is this an issue of his privacy being invaded by the public or the public being invaded by his privacy?

    2. I think the mailman's privacy gets invaded. He feels uncomfortable and tires to escape from this situation. The reason why he feels uncomfortable is that he comes from the place where normal rules tell him that being naked is not appropriate espically in front of the public. Instead of saying that his privacy gets invaded by the public,it is better to think his privacy is invaded by social rules.

  8. The commercial is trying to sell Zalando shoes which, as my research shows, also sell men’s shoes. It is interesting, however, that they only advertise women’s shoes. Therefore, this commercial is based off of the stereotypes of women loving shoes and the men does not. The background of the commercial is a place that most of us can’t experience anymore in our usual “home.” So as humans we are naturally drawn to those settings. The author, then, definitely uses the background setting of magically clear lake, green forest, flat green grass, with green mountains in the background to appeal to its audience. Alone with that the author shows a mail men in his uniform that represents more of the city like life. Therefore, allowing the audience associate the life that most people have in the cities with the careless life in the grassland to the shoes. I also noted that all of the women are in good shape and almost all of the men are too. This definitely draws female audience even more because they will associate the shoes with good body and good looking (especially when the women puts them on to show how good it fits). Another element that the company uses is the obviously naked people. We as humans are naturally attracted to a naked bodies even if some parts are blocked. Also as Dennis Wolfe pointed out the women are so in love with the shoes that even if the rules doesn’t permit them to wear the shoes, they still bought it.
This commercial only cover the consider “private parts” of a human anatomy. Parts such as the male mammary is not covered. Basically, they sensor the parts that would be covered in a beach situation.
This commercial would relate to our course theme because it talks about human body parts, which is a private matter and it talks about a public matter, such as human interaction with each other and with the world.

  9. I agree with Yi's comment on the point 'other people may feel uncomfortable if one is naked in the public.' I think this is issue about public and privacy. Since naked people, as our common sense, is a kind of privacy which should not appear in the public. But in this advertisment, people in the community are all naked except the mailman. Those naked people get uncomfortable at the mailman while the mailman is uncomfortable at others as well. I think it is a kind of invading.

  10. As many of my classmates before have said, the products are shoes from Zalando. The company uses the nudist community as well as attractive young women to sell it's product. The nudist communtiy attracts the viewer and the attractive women hold the viewer's attention. Notice how they all seem to be naked but, the women wear make-up and have fashionable haircuts. The commercial persuades the viewer to believe that even in a place where clothes are not worn, shoes are necessary and still stylish. Many of my classmates have noticed the stereotype that women buy shoes frequently. As I said before, even though these women are nudists they still want "stylish" shoes. This commercial is obviously aimed at both males and females from the ages of 18-30. It uses young females as a main focus to draw in both male and female viewers. Whether or not this commercial is provacative is based on the viewer's opinion. For instance, I may not be offended by naked people where another viewer may be taken back by their lack of clothing. This commercial relates to our course theme in a number of ways. As I have repeated, this commercial focuses on a group of nudists. Nudy is something considered private and not to be done in a public space. There is a sign displayed at the beggining of the commercial that allows their nudity in a public setting, therefore switching the traditional roles. Another way this relates to our course theme is the issue of other's private matters invading your private space. Many of my classmates have noted the mailman's lack of comfort with the situation. From his body language you can see he feels as though they are invading his public space with their privacy. I do believe the man at the end of the commercial also asks the mailman to either remove his clothes or asks him why he is still wearing them, causing the mailman to scream. This comment obviously makes the mailman uncommfortable and invades his privacy to some degree.

  11. This commercial is very different. The advertisers use the naked people to draw attention to the product they are selling. The main message behind the commercial is to sell shoes, but with the presentation in the commercial others things can be brought to attention. The commercial may lead into some stereotypes or just to the over all appeal of the companies shoes. Using sex to sell a product has become very common and a way to stir up some attention to the product.
